Intern Profile

Our interns are the future of the speech-language pathology profession. We are delighted to help each intern along their journey to a rewarding career.

Most importantly, our interns love to help others.  Philanthropy is a way of life.  Caring and understanding are as important as breathing.  Successful applicants demonstrate their drive through previous experiences volunteering at church, school, university and civic groups.

Secondly, successful applicants are naturally drawn to and relate well with children.  This is best shown through previous experience working with children, such as babysitting, working in a school or daycare setting, or tutoring.  Of course, working with children with disabilities is a plus, as is experience leading entire classrooms of children.  If you do not have this experience, you may want to consider delaying your application while you obtain it.  It is helpful to volunteer at a NAYEC accredited facility or a local SLP clinic.  Volunteer commitments should be long-standing.  Additionally, coursework in child development, especially in the areas of speech-language and child development, are helpful.

In our field, communication skills, verbal, non-verbal, and written, are paramount.  Our interns all have successfully completed some undergraduate coursework, though GPA isn’t everything.

It is helpful to be experienced with various types of technology- such as word processing, cloud computing, blog entry, as well as photo and video technology.  We also need artistic talent and writers, though these skills alone are not enough to be successful in our program.
